The remains of the dinner Abby had prepared for Tink and me were all put away. Tink was out in the front yard playing with T.P., and Abby and I had just about finished doing dishes. The meal at Abby’s had been a nice break from all the drama I’d witnessed between Danny and Darci.
“But Abby,” I said, handing her the last plate to dry. “He treats her like a little kid. And it’s almost like he’s trying to separate her from those she cares about.”
She wiped the plate carefully as she thought about that. “Unfortunately, some men are like that. They want to be the center of their partner’s universe, and they see anyone else as a threat to that position.”
“I wouldn’t want to be in a relationship like that.” I swirled the washcloth around in the soapy water.
“I don’t imagine you would, but it’s Darci’s business, not yours.”
“I know,” I admitted grudgingly. “I hope she doesn’t let him move in with her.” I turned and looked at her. “I told you I think that’s what Danny has in mind?”
Abby nodded.
“He’s using Becca’s trouble as an excuse,” I continued, “but he won’t take Darci’s conviction that Becca’s innocent seriously.” I fished the silverware out of the water and scrubbed them furiously until they shone. Rinsing them off, I placed them in the drainer.
“Again, Ophelia, that’s Darci’s concern.” She picked up the silverware, dried them quickly, and put them away.
“That may be, but somebody needs to help her,” I mumbled, more to myself than to Abby.
“So you intend to proceed with your meddling?”
My head whipped toward Abby. I was shocked at her choice of words. Meddle? From a woman who bought a dog without talking to me about it first? Now that was meddling.
“It’s not meddling,” I replied indignantly. “I’m supporting my friend.”
Abby’s lips were pursed in disapproval, showing me what she really thought. Her attitude ticked me off, and I tossed the dishcloth in the sink, splashing water onto the window above it.
Bracing my wet hands on my hips, I stared at her. “What is up with you? In the past, you’ve always encouraged me to ‘follow my destiny,’ to ‘use my talent to help others.’ Plus, you’re usually the first one who wants to rush into a mess like this.” I paused and took a deep breath, but before I could speak Abby made the most of my silence.
“Not this time,” she said, her tone abrupt.
“Why?”
She turned on her heel and walked away from me. “You’ll bring more misfortune onto your house.”
I leaned against the counter and stared at her back. “How do you know? You said you didn’t sense anything.”
“I’m not, but you’ve already brought bad luck by pointing at the moon—”
My groan cut her off. “We’re not back to that moon thing, are we?” I asked.
She whirled around, her eyes angry. “Don’t you dare scoff at the old ways,” she said, shaking a finger at me. “You’ll only bring more bad luck.”
I grabbed my head. Man,
